However, he has since recovered and continues to work as a television presenter and journalist. In the video below, he discusses his experience with non-local consciousness during the coma, while his doctors were predicting a poor outcome and saying it was hopeless, his wife kept the faith. The video is short and it's a great story.

Never Giving Up: The Incredible Recovery of Jennifer Flewellen

When tragedy struck on September 25, 2017, Peggy Means faced every parent's nightmare. Her daughter, Jennifer Flewellen, then 35, suffered a devastating car accident in Niles, Michigan, after dropping off her three young sons at school. In a split second, Jennifer’s life changed forever as she veered off the road and collided with a utility pole. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and quickly placed on life support in a medically-induced coma12.

Doctors’ Dire Prognosis

The outlook was grim from the start. Doctors informed Means that Jennifer would likely never wake up from the coma. Within days, Peggy remembers hospital staff urging her to take her daughter off life support. The message was blunt: there was little to no hope for Jennifer’s recovery. Yet, Peggy refused. “No, not as of today. We're not going to do that,” she insisted, holding fast to her faith and hope132.

A Mother’s Relentless Devotion

For the next five years, Means became a tireless advocate and caregiver for her daughter. Despite constant advice from medical professionals and the fading presence of friends and family, Peggy visited Jennifer almost every day. She worked long hours as an industrial sewer, eventually transitioning her work to home so she could maximize time with Jennifer.

Peggy never spoke to Jennifer as if she were gone. She shared stories, cleaned her daughter, and took her outside in a wheelchair for sunlight—always acting as though Jennifer could hear and understand. When staff—or even family—expressed doubt or suggested giving up, Peggy stood her ground: "We have no room for negativity."132

The Miracle Moment

August 2022 brought an extraordinary turning point. During one of their outdoor visits, Peggy told Jennifer a joke—a routine part of their time together. Suddenly, Jennifer laughed. It was the very first response in nearly five years. “When she woke up, it scared me at first because she was laughing and she had never done that,” recounted Peggy. She quickly took out her phone, documenting the miraculous moment as evidence132.

At first, moments of clarity were brief and intermittent. But over the following days, Jennifer began responding to yes or no questions, gradually demonstrating awareness and understanding. Peggy, undeterred by skepticism from medical staff, pressed for speech and physical therapy. With her mother's encouragement and determination, Jennifer progressed from making small sounds to saying vowels and even remembering parts of her past before the accident12.

Steps Toward Recovery

Jennifer not only woke up but is actively regaining cognitive and physical abilities. Her rehabilitation involved months of intensive therapy at the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, where Peggy continued to learn as an at-home caregiver and advocate1.

Today, Jennifer is home and making up for lost time with her sons. She still faces many challenges—she can’t recall anything about the accident or her years in coma—but her determination, aided by her mother’s steadfast devotion, is inspiring.

The Unsung Hero

Jennifer's recovery is hailed as a miracle, but medical experts and all who know the family agree: Peggy’s unwavering hope, love, and advocacy were crucial. As Dr. Ralph Wang, Jennifer’s rehabilitation physician, put it: “This is a story about Jenn, but it’s really a story about her mom too, as an unsung hero… Her mom really drove everything, especially while Jenn was comatose. It’s a lot of work.”1

Jennifer’s journey is a testament to the power of hope, the impact of never giving up, and the extraordinary lengths a mother will go for her child132.
